Quotes--To Forgive

When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.”
~Catherine Ponder

To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.”
~Robert Muller

Always forgive your enemies , nothing annoys them so much.”
~Oscar Wilde

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.”
~Lewis B. Smedes

Sincere forgiveness isn't colored with expectations that the other person apologize or change. Don't worry whether or not they finally understand you. Love them and release them. Life feeds back truth to people in its own way and time.
~ Sara Paddison

You will know that forgiveness has begun when you recall those who hurt you and feel the power to wish them well.
~Lewis B. Smedes

When a deep injury is done us, we never recover until we forgive
~ Alan Paton

"Forgiveness is a funny thing. It warms the heart and cools the sting."
~Willian.A.Ward

Forgive to attain inner peace. Forgive for your own good. Forgive to neutralize the poison. Forgive to subdue the fire that blazes within. Forgive to please Allah and remind yourself how the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) used to forgive and give glad tidings to everyone regardless of how they treated him.

I find this quote about forgiveness very interesting:

We all like to forgive, and love best not those who offend us least, nor who have done most for us, but those who make it most easy for us to forgive them.

Samuel Butler (1835–1902), English author. Samuel Butler’s Notebooks (1951, p.236).

It takes a while to learn to forgive people the hard way... doesn't it! :)

forgiving is hard, in some instances i find myself, forgiving then unforgiving and then forgiving again... and it goes on

don't know when it will be for good...

:) interesting dilemma.

I suppose with time one tends to forgive, although sometimes it's next to impossible to forgive someone.

And I believe that forgiveness comes from the heart. You can't force it.The fresher the wound, the closer the source, the more it hurts and the more harder to forgive.

One shouldn't wait for another to realize his wrong doing and apologize.Rather one should consider forgiving on ones own for ones own sake.

as it surfaced, the memory gets refreshed... so just got to forget it

It's hard to forgive because it's hard to forget. And it's not like if one deliberately keeps hanging to the hurt. It's very natural. Don't worry, like they say "time heals all". It surely does (there can be exceptions). The healing is quicker if we keep a clean positive mind and a open heart.

It's a lot easier if the person who caused the injury sincerely apologizes and makes it up to us. But then again one shouldn't count on it. That may never happen. So one it's best to shhhh the demons within and outside.

Although its hard to forgive someone who has done massive hurt..but in the long run, it's not a question of whether they deserve to be forgiven. You're not forgiving them for their sake. You're doing it for yourself. For your own health and well-being, forgiveness is simply the most energy-efficient option. It frees you from the incredibly toxic, debilitating drain of holding a grudge. Don't let these people live rent free in your head. If they hurt you before, why let them keep doing it year after year in your mind? It's not worth it but it takes heart effort to stop it. You can muster that heart power to forgive them as a way of looking out for yourself. It's one thing you can be totally selfish about.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!

but easier said then done.......SERIOUSLY!!!!
most of us fully understand and agree to the phenomenon of forgiving ppl..but still they r unable to do dat......may be at some point in time they find themselves great enuff to forgive the person causing hurt to them...but...not so easily :)

I believe that forgiving has nothing to do with forgetting. Its only when i am able to remember how trivial the wound was as compared to what life has brought to me today, that i am able to let go of my resentment and stop questioning god for what happened and why it happened to me.

exactly.....well said Isbah...this question..

"WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS???"

hinders u from forgiving.and when either u get this question answered or u get better than what u deserved.....u will forgive dat person...but again....behind dat the element of forgetting the thing holds...

"The stupid neither forgive nor forget;
the naive forgive and forget;
the wise forgive but do not forget."

~ Thomas Szasz.

i think forgetting is a an act so stupid that it'll make u make the same mistakes again!

And since we all agree that forgiveness is more beneficial for our own soul, what we can do is, ask Allah to help us forgive whole heartedly, n im sure we'd be able to Forgive, in no time!

The basic Cause of restlessness inside us is a weak faith. If we trust God and believe that whatever HEs ordained/devised for us is for our good only then something like forgiving (plus a lot of other things) would come naturally to us.

Also i think we should also pray for the one whos hurt us, so that she/he gets guidance, understands/realises her/his wrong and repents. Guidance/Hadayt is itself a painful process.
Now what revenge would be better than that !

Forgetting implies letting go of the resentment and putting the bad memory into archive.

When people make wrong CHOICES, take up the wrong means out of FREE WILL and hurt us by CHOICE, it is NOT be blamed on destiny. Nopes.
The end result may be destined, not the pathway to it.

Jews -- Tooth for tooth, eye for eye.

Christians -- You slap me on one cheek, I present you second cheek to get slapped on.

Muslims- No revenge, No self harm. You hurt me, I forgive you =)

i personally feel that just to keep urself satisfied, tension-free and away from problems...

its better to forget if you cannot do anything (kill the problem/person)...cuz forgiving is intricate and easy to say than do...!!!
