Barbara Walters, of Television's 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan several years before the Afghan conflict.
She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.
She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands.
From Ms Walters' vantage point, despite the overthrow of the oppres sive Taliban regime, the women walked even further back behind their husbands, and seemed to appear happy to maintain the old custom.
Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, 'Why do you continue with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'
The woman looked Ms Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said... 'Land Mines.'
The moral of the story is (no matter what language you speak and where you go)
Ok, So I return to my office seat after a minute or two and find my wall paper set to this image. Then I see a very giggly teebster! So lesson learnt is never to leave your work station unlocked even for a minute!
I have had this T-shirt for almost a decade and I continue to treasure it. My friend, Momina gifted it to me. She told me before hand that she's going to get me a t-shirt..I was like.."no no no beeru, i don't wear t-shirts"..and she said "when you see it, you will surely want to wear it"
It's the size of my hand and the message on the shirt says: THOUGHT I'D BUY YOU A T-SHIRT FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY BUT THE TAILOR HAD THE WRONG SIZE WELL AT LEAST I REMEMBERED THE DAY!!
This image reminded me of this one time, rather two times, I got chased by a dog. Both the incidents occurred in quick successions. I was around 11 years old wandering on the hill tops of Azad Kashmir during summer vacations. The first time I was leading my gang, jumping and humming away and all of a sudden, out of no where a wild stray white/ yellowish labore dog pounced off an intersection. Since I was the speedy me, I was quite ahead of my cousins in the walk. Being the nearest victim I was the target of attack. Gulp! So I ran, and I ran. I ran for my life towards my cousins. I ran my heart out, and that is one feeling I clearly remember. It felt as if my heart was in my mouth beating a zillion times a second. Thank God I didn't run in the opposite direction. The dog got scared of the crowd of my cousins and retreated.
The other time was perhaps a week after my first encounter. Just my luck! I was playing in a yard at one of our relatives place. On a corner, lied a big brown bushy dog. He looked extremely sad to me so I wanted to pat him to cheer him up. I tip toed towards him. When I was almost 4 meters away he got up and sat so I stopped. Ah, his big black poor sad eyes looking at me deeply. I took a step or two and extended my hand towards the dogee. The big black sad eyes became ferocious scary large eyes. This time I screamed first and sprinted like crazy again. My cousin and my brother were playing cricket in the lawn near by. My cousin took charge of the situation. It was his pet.
Four Ants are moving through a forest. They see an ELEPHANT coming towards them. Ant 1 says : We should KILL him. Ant 2 says : No, Let us break his Leg alone. Ant 3 says : No, we will just throw him away from our path. Ant 4 says : No, we will LEAVE him because he is ALONE and we are FOUR.
About.com's Career Planning Guide: "I have the opportunity to visit many of my fellow career advice sites on the Web. Through my extensive virtual travels I have found that articles about succeeding on the job abound. But, what if you wanted to know how to get fired? Could you find an article that would tell you how to perform so poorly on the job that your employer, with a swish of his or her hand, would summarily dismiss you? I looked around and found nothing that fit the bill. So I decided to write such an article myself.
P.S. If you came here looking for advice on how to stay employed, just do the opposite of everything I tell you here. "
Arrive late for work Being on time is for wimps. Drag yourself out of bed whenever you feel like it. Stop to run an errand on your way to the office.
Don't forget the coffee No not for your boss -- for yourself! You're already late so why not stop for a cup of coffee on the way to work? Don't forget to get a muffin or a roll too (crumbs on your tie look really good).
Eat at your desk I mean your coffee and roll, not your lunch silly. Why would you want to work through lunch anyway? And take your time — you're in no hurry to start working.
Take a long lunch An hour for lunch? Are they nuts? That can't possibly be enough time to get together with an old friend and run a few more errands.
Make personal phone calls If you can't make your phone calls from the office, when else will you find the time? Don't make those calls short and sweet -- chat away.
Speaking of chatting... Let's not forget about the good old Net. You can go into a chat room any time of day, so why waste your precious personal time.
Send lots of email Use those eight hours at work to take care of all that personal email. Oh and don't forget to use your work email address.
Download, download, download... Your connection is much faster at work than on your home pc. And besides, there are some things you wouldn't want your significant other to see.
Make the customers/clients really mad There are several ways to do this. If you deal with customers in person, ignore them while you talk to your co-workers. Don't have answers to their questions. If most of your contact is by phone, keep yours busy so clients can't get through. If they bother to leave a message, don't return their phone calls.
Don't ever go beyond your job description Even when a project is down to the wire and your help is desperately needed, just remember: "It's not your job."
Leave work early Who made that five o'clock rule anyway? If you leave 15 minutes early think of how much you can get done before dinner.
Party hardy Nights are made for partying. Don't worry — you can sleep late tomorrow. After all, you do plan to get to work late, don't you?
During an Engineering Project Management lecture I recently attended the professor asked the class to define the term "variance". Let me describe the class first. It's a post-graduate class. It contains students of varying ages and excluding my self the class is a class of geeks. It's an evening program so most students are professionals. They come from different engineering backgrounds with plenty of experience in their respective domains. Some are PhD students, while some of the others already have a masters degree under their belts. So discussions turn out to be a war of words between nerds. Coming back to the question. Everybody raised hands in a jiffy. One by one the students gave a comprehensive definition of the term variance, some adding mathematical description and application details. I was trying my best to make sense out of every bit of what all of my learned class mates were saying. Clueless I sat and listened. Amidst the discussion the Professor moved towards the board, picked the marker and wrote "K.I.S.S". Then he turned towards the class. The whole class subdued. A moment later the Professor exclaimed "Keep It Simple Stupid" While others made surprised faces, one student was rather amused by the remark. Hehe..that would be me.
I was at a cosmetic store looking for a particular body spray.A huge collection of perfume-sprays was exhibited there. Unable to find the one I wanted, I looked around for the salesman. I spotted one nearby. He was sorting and organizing body sprays on the rack. So I asked him to guide me to the Impulse series. He gave me a confused embarrassed look and said "main khud dhoondh raha hoon, may salesman nahee hoon"
so i was like....Oops! I apologized and shared a giggle with my brother.
